History
I initially started doing photography at the age of 10, doing many forms of photography including traditional forms of wedding photography, I have been in photographic clubs improving my skills and in the process gaining senior level with excellent work, but it is only since August 2016 that my photographic skills shot up from an already very good level to where I am right now at the age of 50. It was at this time that I really started concentrating on the business as well, before that it was only when I had a bee in the bonnet.
Training
The main catalyst for the change was when I realized that I had hit a ceiling in my photographic skills and needed to find a way to break down that barrier. Part of that was to find the right photographic training institute giving excellent advanced skills training which I found in DPC which you can find at https://digitalphotographycourses.co.za/ and also to get rid of certain toxic people in my life.

Lessons Learnt
Also, I had to begin really learning what it takes to start and grow a successful photographic business. Something a dear friend highlighted to me was my whole focus has to be on creating a BRAND and not just a business.
Part of the Brand creation process is to determine what we are about, the style of photography we offer and what our values are. It is no good just knowing them you have to put it to stone.
The website has grown from a being a typical photographer’s showcase site to now being a photographic business site. I have also had search engine optimization professionally done. Part of this process has also been to create online advertising on Facebook and Google.
I also knew in the past that you have to write blog articles which I only did a few of, but lately I have been writing one at least once a week, which needs to be kept up relentlessly.

Expanding
I initially had only one Facebook page for the business, but the non-sport side of the business hardly registered on the Richter magnitude scale. This led me to divide the two sides of the business onto two different Facebook pages. Now the non-sport page is a section in its own right.
The major other aspect is to still continue to grow my skill and knowledge, and of course continuously practicing that skill to grow towards photographic nirvana.
Concern
A huge concern of mine has also been towards having more staff in the business as I love to help people, the only difficulty here has been to find dedicated individuals that will continue their learning process as well as continue to function within my style and values.
My main aim towards you our valued customers is being there for you no matter what. To be helpful, accommodating, reliable and efficient.

Direction for the future
| We at Edward Ruthven Photography Krugersdorp endeavor to be extremely creative, technically proficient, and productive irrespective of the challenges that is faced. |
This last year our main focus in business has been in the sport arena, specifically the Speedball paintball arena. This sport has taken up a huge chunk of our time and resources, leaving us with little extra time for the main focus drive towards Couple, Family, Wedding etc. photography. Proudly we have just completed negotiations with our amazing assistant photographer Natali Savva, who will take full reigns of all paintball related photography. Natali has been involved for many years in paintball, as a player and support staff, therefore she is uniquely positioned to be able to handle this important position.
Part of trying to get a photographer is due to our philosophy that we don’t enjoy dropping people that have come to trust, love and enjoy what we do for them.
We are going to start with a bang at the Monte Vista Weddings Expo in January, letting a lot of engaged couples know about what we can do for them.
We will also be expanding our offerings into the studio realm, where Natali Savva has an extreme affinity towards a unique studio look, we have already allocated equipment for this process, but are currently looking for a space to setup the equipment in. There will also be a third Facebook page setup to cover this particular form of our photography.

Training
I have just signed up for another training course to improve my skills, and in return to assist my staff in gaining better knowledge. This is going to be an ongoing process, as we can never know enough or will never be the best, we can only be better than what we were on a regular basis.

We will of course continue to read articles and watch YouTube videos to further our skills, applying practice techniques to this so that we know we can provide our absolute best. This continuous process allows us to also modify all our knowledge and skills to give some new form of futuristic benefit to our customers.
We are also in the process of creating training material to help others in being very capable in their respective photographic areas. We have already identified an area of concern for business owners in a specific environment that regularly requires good photos but usually end up with run of the mill photos that don’t do them justice at all.
